Google Business Profile Verification: Methods & Troubleshooting

6 min read

Why Verification Matters

Unverified Google Business Profiles have limited visibility and functionality. Verification proves you're the legitimate owner and unlocks all GBP features including posts, reviews responses, and insights.

Verification Methods

1. Postcard verification (most common)

  • Google mails a postcard with a 5-digit code to your business address
  • Takes 5-14 business days
  • Enter the code in your GBP dashboard when it arrives
  • Don't change your business name or address while waiting — it resets the process

2. Phone verification

  • Available for some businesses — Google calls or texts a code
  • Instant verification
  • The phone number must match your GBP listing

3. Email verification

  • Google sends a code to your business email
  • The email domain must match your website domain
  • Available for select business categories

4. Video verification

  • Record a video showing your business location, signage, and proof of management
  • Upload through the GBP app
  • Review takes 1-3 business days

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Postcard never arrived: Request a new one after 14 days. Check that your address is formatted correctly.
  • Code expired: Codes expire after 30 days. Request a new postcard.
  • Duplicate listing: If Google already has a listing for your address, you may need to claim it instead of creating a new one.
  • Suspended after verification: Usually caused by violating GBP guidelines (keyword stuffing in business name, virtual office address). Review the guidelines and appeal.

Bulk Verification

Businesses with 10+ locations can apply for bulk verification through Google's business support. This streamlines the process significantly. MyGBP can assist with the bulk verification application and manage the process across all your locations.
